Bone Densitometry

A bone mineral density scan is a diagnostic procedure used to measure bone loss. A simple and painless procedure, a DEXA scan takes just minutes to perform and is a common screening procedure for osteoporosis. The exam utilizes x-ray technology to obtain images of the hip and lower spine. These are the areas where fractures caused by bone loss most commonly occur. After acquisition, the images are sent directly to a computer. Highly sophisticated software containing national measurement standards compares and evaluates the image against national norms. A profile is then generated detailing the level of bone loss and potential risk for bone fractures.
